Search tips
- Enter names in Greek, or transliterated according to the table on the Search page.
- If using Greek, do not include accents and use medial sigma (σ) at the end of a name, not final sigma (ς).
- Searches in the main name fields can be defined precisely:
- To search for names that start with certain letters, begin with a capital letter.
- To search for names that end with certain letters, put a caret symbol (^) at the end.
- Use a simple string of lower case to find all matching names.
A percentage sign (%) indicates a gap of an unknown number of unknown letters between the given letters.
- An underscore (_) stands for each single unknown letter between the given letters.
- The (partial) name of a parent or child restricts the search result to people with a parent or child whose name matches the entered letters.
- When filtering by date, use a negative number to indicate a year BC.
Examples (figures as they were at the start of 2021):
Entering 'kraths' will bring back the 2275 people whose name includes the string κρατησ, whether at the start, at the end or in between.
Entering 'Kraths' will bring back the 52 people whose name begins with Κρατησ, 46 being Κράτης, and 6 Κρατήσιον.
Entering 'kraths^' will bring back the 2269 people whose name ends —κράτης.
Entering 'Kraths^' will bring back the 46 people named Κράτης.
Entering 'k__ths' (i.e. a gap of two letters) will bring back the same 2275 people found by the 'kraths' search, plus 9 others whose names also match (viz., Βουκάττης, Εὐθυκάρτης, Εὐκτίτης and Φιλοκτήτης — the "BUT NOT Name" box in the search form makes it easy to pick out exceptions like this).
Entering 'k%ths' (i.e. a gap of 0 or more letters) will bring back the same 2284 people found by the 'k__ths' search, plus 415 others whose names also match (viz., Ἀλκέτης, Ἀπολλωνικέτης, and on).
